Plan II professor Jerome Bump addresses the ethics of mankind’s relationship to animals in his freshman world literature course. Bump’s strong affinity towards animals has always been apparent, but the 2010-2011 school year is the first in which that relationship has become a prominent educational tool for the class. Through various exercises relating to animals, Bump has helped students to address their emotional intelligence as well as study world literature. The following writings were produce by students in Bump’s class for a project aimed at helping animals at the Austin Pet’s Alive shelter get adopted:

“I’ll be Your Buddy!” | Sadie Witkowski

When Mollie first left her kennel, she immediately put her nose to the ground and begun to hunt for interesting scents in the yard. There’s no question she’s an intelligent and curious dog, though her floppy-tipped ear gives a sense of absurdity. And it’s only one of her many lovable features which make her a wonderful addition to the family.

As visitors stopped to pet her sleek fur, she couldn’t help but lean against their leg and devote her full attention to their pampering. She is an utterly relaxed dog and perfectly willing to sit in companionable silence and watch the world or take a walk and explore the surroundings. Mollie feels no need to bark or cause a ruckus but would rather enjoy taking a walk.

Her best friend status with her companion canine in her kennel indicates her sociability and she would love to belong to a family with small children on whom she could exercise her motherly impulses.

Don’t be surprised if her warm brown eyes seem to have a human intelligence and compassion behind them. Mollie has the most easygoing personality coupled with a genuine curiosity towards the world which makes her such a special find for anyone in need of a best friend.

Mollie was adopted shortly after Sadie wrote this bio

“I wish I had someone to play fetch with me!” | Tim Smartt

June is an exceptionally friendly dog that loves all the joys in life, like long walks on the beach, belly scratches and chasing sticks. She enthusiastically retrieves any object you throw for her, and gently places the object at your feet. Her most impressive trick is the ability to catch a vertically thrown stick before it touches the ground!

In addition to being extremely playful, she is very well-trained. She does not become overly intense during playtime, and she understands when it is time to stop playing. June will patiently sit and wait for you to start playtime. When she is taken on walks, she makes it very easy on the person walking her; she stays very close and doesn’t tug on the leash.

June is an inquisitive dog, eagerly sniffing every object within reach and enjoying the great outdoors. But June’s energy does have its limits; after exercise, she eagerly lies down and recharges her batteries!

As if she didn’t have enough positive qualities, June also has a glossy, ebony coat and floppy ears. June loves kids and is ideal for an active family that enjoys outdoor activities!
